Ben Pugh: Response
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!! Key parts of the novel may be revealed below!
Although Dracula did not make the top of my list, I still enjoyed reading this book. This might have been because of how the sections were marked. It was more of a set of journal entries than a regular novel with chapters. But this is just the frosting on the cake. The rest of his novel, his descriptions and thoughts, is the true brilliance of this novel. The descriptions of images that Stoker writes about seem like vivid images to the reader's mind. I could picture everything while I read the novel.
The structure that Stoker uses to write his novel is very unique. He writes the novel as a set of journal entries and letters. Since I am used to reading normal novels with chapters I did not really like how this novel was structured. But this did not ruin the book for me. My favorite character in the novel has to be Van Helsing. I liked Van Helsing the best because he was the only one smart enough to realize that Lucy was not affected by a natural illness but a supernatural sickness. Because of this I respect Van Helsing a lot. I also like Van Helsing the best because he is able to bring the group together to fight against Dracula and through his guidance and wisdom are able to defeat and kill Dracula.
I would, however, highly recommend this book for others to read. I think that anyone would appreciate the brilliant imagery and symbolism that Stoker uses in his novel. He is able to paint a picture with his words and I think that everyone should experience this.
