The Three Vampire Women
The Three Vampire Women were only mentioned a few times in the novel, so they played a small role in the novel. One of the main reasons that they have a role is because they show the dominance that Dracula has over his victims. Without this fact we would not know, when Dracula attacks Lucy and Mina, if they are actually under Dracula's control or not. The Three Vampire Women also have a special relationship with Dracula. They can be considered his daughters because they were reborn after Dracula bit them. They are considered to be reborn because Dracula now becomes their super-ego and has complete control over them.
"All three had brilliant white teeth, that shone like pearls against the ruby of their voluptuous lips" - Jonathan Harker (Stoker 43)
"'Are we to have nothing tonight?' said one of them, with a low laugh, as she pointed to the bag which he had thrown upon the floor, and which moved as though there were some living thing within it. For answer he nodded his head. One of the women jumped forward and opened it. If my ears did not deceive me there was a gasp and a low wail, as of a half-smothered child" - Jonathan Harker (Stoker 45) "I seized some firewood which was by me, and holding out some of the Wafer, advanced on them towards the fire. They drew back before me, and laughed their low horrid laugh" - Van Helsing (Stoker 389) "At the first coming of the dawn the horrid figures melted in the whirling mist and snow; the wreaths of transparent gloom moved away towards the castle, and were lost" - Van Helsing (Stoker 389) |
"They whispered together, and they all three laughed - such a silvery, musical laugh, but as hard as though the sound never could come through the softness of human lips" - Jonathan Harker (Stoker 43)
"They simply seemed to fade into the rays of the moonlight and pass out through the window, for I could see outsdie the dim, shadowy forms for a moment before they entirely faded away" - Jonathan Harker (Stoker 45) "They began to materialize, till - if God have not take away my reason, for I saw it through my eyes - there were before me in actual flesh the same three women that Jonathan saw in the room, when they would have kissed his throat" - Van Helsing (Stoker 388) |
